Have you ever watched Crime Scene Investigators and wondered what really happens to the evidence at a crime scene and how that evidence is used to solve the crime? Join us in a week-long adventure into the life of a crime scene analyst! Working with Senior Scientists, you will learn how to collect and analyze fingerprints from a simulated crime scene, perform blood type analysis and analyze DNA “fingerprints." At the end of the week, you will present your findings as an expert crime scene technician to our "jury" so they can determine if your lab analysis and scientific evidence is sufficient. The week will close out as you present your finding at a “congressional” hearing on endanger species. Junior scientists will learn about the natural history of whales while they conduct laboratory research using biotechnology techniques, including microscopy, protein extraction, quantification, and gel electrophoresis. Bridgewater Animal Forensic Laboratory (BAFL) needs junior scientists who can use investigative laboratory techniques to aid in determining if “meat” samples from the local fish market are from endangered Cetacean (whale) species. Yet whale meat is still considered a delicacy in some cultures and is often illegally traded on the black market. Whaling (hunting and selling of whale species) is an illegal fishery in the United States. We hope you will join us! Whale of a Mystery
